This course is designed to offer techniques to better operate building systems, particularly Heating, Ventilation and Cooling (HVAC) systems. Commercial heating and air conditioning systems are very similar in equipment and operations for many building types such as barracks, hospitals, hospitality facilities, and laboratories, and the recommendations presented in the module are applicable across the same scale.
By incorporating Green Building principles, commercial building operators can achieve a high performance building that results in improved efficiency, decreased utility costs, and increased life of the building. The purpose of this module is to render insight on how commercial buildings can become high performance buildings, and to provide recommendations for energy efficient and sustainable operations in coordination with the US Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership for Energy and Environmental Design – Existing Buildings (LEED-EB) program. The following is an overview of the course contents:
•History of HVAC in commercial buildings •Benchmarking buildings for energy efficiency •Operating HVAC for comfort •Operating HVAC for efficiency •LEED–EB and Federal Requirements to achieve High Performance Buildings
