Position Summary

Western Area Power Administration offers career opportunities in the fast-paced, dynamic electric utility industry. Western is one of four power marketing administrations within the Department of Energy.

MAJOR DUTIES: At the full performance level, a high-voltage transmission system dispatcher ensures that adequate transmission facilities and required voltage and supportive volt-amp (VAR) levels are maintained; checks all scheduled and prepared switching programs; prepares requested emergency switching programs; issues routine and emergency switching; and coordinates removal and return of protective relaying. In addition, the employee ensures compliance with NERC standards and applicable Regional Transmission Organization policies; monitors and validates real-time data; maintains system operator logs; and responds to system contingencies and to changes in availability and capacity of assigned area transmission facilities. Employee coordinates operational activities with Midwest Reliability Organization (MRO), Midwest Independent System Operator (MISO), Western System Electric Council (WECC), and other interconnected utilities.
