Summary
Portland General Electric is committed to ending the use of coal at the Boardman Power Plant by 2020. Among the renewable energy options being considered by the IOU for the facility is burning biomass as fuel. PGE is working with Northwest universities to identify a crop that is fast growing, local, and economically viable. Arundo donax, a grass, is one option. Research to determine the best technology to prepare the fuel for firing is also under way.
